For Health Information Managers ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll use ChatGPT to generate complete in-service training modules for your coding staff and CDI specialists — including learning objectives, case examples, quiz questions, and a PowerPoint-ready outline — in 30–45 minutes instead of 4–6 hours.
What you'll need
Go to chatgpt.com and sign in (or create a free account).
Click New chat to start fresh.
What you should see: A clean chat window with a text input at the bottom.
Before jumping to your topic, give ChatGPT context about your audience and standards. This shapes the entire output.
What to type:
I am a Health Information Manager creating in-service training for my hospital coding staff. Our coders are:
- Credentialed inpatient coders (CCS, RHIT, or RHIA)
- Experienced with ICD-10-CM/PCS and MS-DRG assignment
- Working remotely and receiving training via self-paced modules
I need training that is accurate, practical, and includes realistic case examples from actual inpatient cases. Please don't oversimplify — these are experienced professionals.
What you should see: ChatGPT confirms the audience profile and is ready to build training.
Now describe the specific training topic and ask for a complete outline first.
What to type:
Create a 20-minute self-paced training module on [your topic, e.g., "2026 ICD-10 sepsis sequencing updates"]. Include:
1. Learning objectives (3-4)
2. Overview of what changed and why
3. Three realistic inpatient case examples with correct coding and sequencing
4. Common errors to avoid
5. Five multiple-choice quiz questions with answer key
6. PowerPoint slide outline (one bullet per slide)
What you should see: A structured module outline covering all sections. This typically runs 600–1,200 words of content.
ChatGPT gives you the skeleton — now build out the parts that need more detail.
Ask follow-up questions like:
What you should see: Expanded, more specific content ready to drop into your training material.
Once the content is solid, get the slide bullets.
What to type:
Now give me the complete PowerPoint outline for this module. Each slide should have:
- Slide title
- 3-4 bullet points (fragment style, not full sentences)
- Any animation notes (e.g., "reveal bullets one at a time")
Format it as: SLIDE [#]: [Title] / Bullets: / Notes:
What you should see: A complete slide-by-slide outline you can paste directly into PowerPoint or Google Slides.
Read every case example and quiz question carefully. Check:
Fix any errors — ChatGPT is excellent at structure and explanation but can produce outdated or imprecise codes. You are the accuracy check.
Annual ICD-10 update training:
Create a 20-minute training on the top 10 ICD-10-CM/PCS changes effective October 1, 2026 that affect inpatient coding at a community hospital. Focus on: [your top affected DRGs]. Include before/after examples and a quiz.
CDI query compliance training:
Create a 15-minute training for CDI specialists on compliant query writing per AHIMA 2024 guidelines. Cover: what makes a query leading vs. non-leading, examples of compliant and non-compliant queries for [specific query type], and a 5-question compliance scenario quiz.
New coder orientation — coding basics:
Create a new coder orientation module covering: our department's coding workflow, key EHR navigation steps, how to use the encoder, escalation process for complex cases, and a checklist for self-audit before submitting a case.
